1- Introduction
 
This Chapter is an extract from the Diary of Anne Frank. This diary was written during World War II. At the time of invasion of Germany there was the rule of Hitler. He hates Jewish people. He used to sent them to concentration camp, where families were tortured to the extreme. Only one percent of them survive. Anne Frank was thirteen years old Jewish girl. Her family was also send to concentration camp. In her family only her father survived. She died after suffering torture in the year 1945.
Her father got her diary and it was published by him after her death. 

2- Characterization 
• Anne Frank- She was thirteen years old Jewish girl. She died in the year 1945.
• Margot Frank- Anne's sister, who is sixteen years old. 
• Otto Frank- Anne's father, a Jewish businessman who has left Germany after Hitler's came to power, and found refuge in Holland. 
• Mrs Edith Hollander Frank- Anne's mother. She was very much talkative by nature. 
 Mrs Kuperus- Headmistress of Anne frank's Montessori school.
• Mr. Keesing- Anne's maths teacher who punishes her thrice.


3- About The Writer 
• She was born on 12th June 1929, Frankfurt, Germany. 
• She was a Jewish teenager who was a world famous diarist. 
• She was the victim of World war II.
• From The Diary Of Anne Frank, made her renowned around the world. 
• She died when she was only fifteen years old in the year 1945.
• She died in the concentration camp, Germany. 

4- Chapter Summary 
This Chapter is an extract from the Diary of Anne Frank. She was gifted a Diary by her father on her thirteenth birthday. She was very happy after getting the diary, because that was the time of world war II and Hitler was in the power. Hitler hates the Jewish people. He used to sent the jewish families to the concentration camp in order to torture them. Being a child, Anne Frank also wants to share her thoughts. But she can't as if she criticize she has to pay in return by giving her life. So she decided to confide everything to the Diary.
Here she has written a beautiful line that "Paper had more patience than people". It means she can share whatever she wants. Paper would not irritate and not going to tell her secrets to anyone like people. She also thought that nobody would be interested in reading her diary.
For Anne, diary was her real friend with whom she could share anything. 
She began writing Diary from June 1942. She called her 'kitty' (diary).
• Anne's Childhood
According to her, Otto frank was the most adorable father. He was 36 years old when he got married to her mother Edith Hollander Frank who was 25 years old. 
Her parents migrated to Holland in the year 1933. At that time she and her sister lived with their grandmother in Aachen. After the settlement of parents Anne and her sister went to them. Anne's grandmother fall ill in 1941 and she died in 1942. Anne was very close to her grandmother. So Anne lit extra candle on her own birthday as she wants to pay the tribute to her grandmother. 
• Anne's School Life
She completed her Montessori nursery school till the age of six years. At her farewell, school Headmistress mrs Kuperus gave her an emotional goodbye.
• Her Second School
Now Anne started her diary entry from 20th June, 1942. Here she mentioned the day of the exam result.
All the students were afraid as they don't know who would pass and fail. Anne only worries was about maths. She doesn't like maths. According to her "Teachers are the most unpredictable creatures on the earth". As they can pass or fail any student. 
• Punishment By Maths Teacher To Anne Frank 
Anne was a good student. She had a good relationship with all the teachers except Mr. Keesing (maths teacher). She was very much Talkative by nature. He decided to punish her. He asked her to write an essay on the topic "A Chatterbox". Chatterbox means a person who talks too much. Anne was confused about what to write. But she had no Choice. So she wrote the three pages for her satisfaction. She wrote hilarious essay, which made everyone laugh including Mr Keesing. After two days, again she started talking. So mr Keesing punished her again. He gave her another essay as a punishment on the topic "An Incorrigible Chatterbox"(something that cannot be changed). She again submitted the essay. 
Third time, she again got punished as, he asked her to write on, 'Quack, Quack, Quack, said mistress Chatterbox'.
This time she decides to take the help of her friend Sanne who was good in poetry writing. 
In the form of Poetry she wrote about three baby ducklings of a father Swan and a mother duck. The father Swan bit the ducklings until they died. Because they quack too much.
This time mr Keesing understood what Anne wants to convey. This talkative nature of her is inherited from her mother. She can't change this nature as her mother was also talkative. Since then Anne was allowed to talk and had not been assigned extra homework.

• The ride to Ooty was uneventful. We rested for a while every 50 km or so and used the time to capture the magnificent landscape with my Handycam.From Ooty we went on to Bangalore. What a contrast! The noise and pollution of this once-beautiful city really broke my heart.

Ans- Anne loves her grandmother alot. She stayed with her grandmother when she was four years old because her parents were settling in Holland. After few months she shifted to Holland. Her grandmother fell ill in 1941 and she died in 1942. So she lit one extra candle on her own birthday, as she wants to pay the tribute to her grandmother. 
vi- Why was Mr Keesing annoyed with Anne? What did he ask her to do?
Ans- Mr Keesing was annoyed with Anne because she talked too much in the class.

Ans- No, Anne was not right when she said the above statement because the world became interested in her musings when her Diary was published. It also became one of the most widely read book of the world. 
x- Why does Anne need to give a brief sketch about her family? Does she treat 'Kitty' as an insider or an outsider?
Ans- According to her, if she gives a brief sketch about her family then people will understand her life. 
'Kitty' is the name given to Diary by her with whom she could share all her secrets. So she thinks of her as an insider.

Yes, Anne passes a sense of humour. This comes forward when she wrote third essay in the form of poem.
She portrayed a humourous story of how a father Swan bit the ducklings until they died because they Quacked too much. Her poem left great impact on Mr Keesing who never punished her after that.
